Saying good bye when the year is over

So much preparation goes into getting ready to become an aupair, saying good bye to family, getting the visa, getting your things in order, fear of becoming homesick, what if the family does not like me? so many thoughts and preparations but we never really talk about the good bye after a successful aupair year.

I have had many aupairs ask me for advice on how to handle the departure, how to say good bye to the host children which have become like their own in many ways. How to say good bye to host parents that have become like a mother and father for them while in America. This is a very hard time for aupairs. This has been a life changing experience in many ways for the aupairs, new friends made, learning about a new culture, a new language learned. Many aupairs experience reverse culture shock upon returning home to their countries. They have adapted to the easy way of life here in America, driving everywhere, ordering take out for dinner, drive through food, large houses and most of all a year away from home and the realities of life.  Many of the aupairs have complained about being homesick for America and their host families. The first three months are the hardest. Your own country feels foreign to you, maybe you feel your friends have not changed at all but you have changed so much, you have experienced and met new challenges that have changed you. This means you have had a great year and can draw from these experiences for years to come. You will always have a family in America. So my advice to aupairs is: Departure is not a Good Bye but "So Long until next time we meet"

And my advice to host families saying good bye, is to make sure you tell your aupair how much he/she has meant to your family. How you and your children will treasure their friendship for years to come. Take them to the airport give them a proper send off, as their families did for them when they came one year ago to stay with you. You are now a part of their family as well.

Greetings from around the world

My little one turned six today and she got cake, soda, gifts in bed which is our tradition. It is a great way to start the day. She also got greetings from around the world thanks to all our aupairs which are like big sisters to her. She is a global citizen with only six years of age. Her grand parents also live in three different countries, Norway, Sweden and Texas ( yes Texas is its own country in many ways). In this digital age we are only a phone call, a facetime a skype call away from each other. What will this world look like when she is grown up?

Winter safety tips

With snow comes outdoor fun like sledding, skiing, snowboarding and ice skating. These are all great ways for kids (and adults) to increase fitness, balance, focus and self-confidence.
It’s important that kids have the freedom to be active but we also want them to be safe. So make sure they are wearing a cool helmet to prevent a head injury that can ruin the fun down the road. Helmets prevent or reduce the effects of 53 percent of the head injuries suffered by children while skiing or snowboarding.
Here are a few more things to think about before you and your kids head out into the snow.

Safety Tip

Top Winter Safety Tips

  • Always wear sport-specific, properly fitting safety gear when participating in winter sports.
  • It’s worth repeating: Kids should always wear helmets when they ski, sled, snowboard and play ice hockey. There are different helmets for different activities.
  • Parents should wear helmets too. Remember, your children learn and practice safety habits by watching you.
  • Dress in layers and wear warm, close-fitting clothes. Make sure that long scarves are tucked in so they don’t get entangled in lifts, ski poles or other equipment.
  • Stay hydrated. Drink fluids before, during and after winter play.
  • Anyone who becomes distracted or irritable, or begins to hyperventilate, may be suffering from hypothermia or altitude sickness, or they may be too tired to participate safely in winter sports. They need to go indoors to warm up and rest.
  • Children under 6 should not ride a snowmobile, and nobody under 16 should drive one. All snowmobile drivers and passengers should wear helmets designed for high-speed motor sports. A bike helmet isn’t sufficient for a vehicle that can go up to 90 miles per hour.
